Why is there a Zepbound shortage?

The FDA attributes the Zepbound shortage to an "increase in demand for the drug." According to Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Zepbound, although they continue to produce and distribute the medication, the "unprecedented demand" is leading to a supply shortage. Essentially, demand is exceeding supply.

To meet increasing demand, Eli Lilly is enhancing its global manufacturing and supply chain. During a February investor call, the company announced plans to produce 1.5 times more doses of Zepbound in the latter half of this year compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, a new plant in North Carolina is set to open by the end of 2024, with Zepbound doses expected to start shipping in 2025. Eli Lilly also plans to establish several new facilities in the coming years to address demand, although the company anticipates that demand will continue to exceed supply throughout 2024.

When will Zepbound be available?

The current shortage of Zepbound is anticipated to continue until June 2024, with an improvement expected in availability from July 2024 onwards. Eli Lilly continues to manufacture and distribute all dosage strengths of Zepbound; however, high demand is currently exceeding supply, making it challenging to fill prescriptions and find stock at pharmacies. It is hoped that by July, the supply of Zepbound will become more stable, and it will be easier for people to obtain their prescriptions.
